I've been a Pokémon since before Black/White came out. Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky was my first-ever console game, and Platinum was my first main-series Pokémon game. Here I've ranked my top 35 favorite Pokémon of all time! The #1 thing I look for in Pokémon are their designs, but nostalgia and other factors will come into play. These are definitely loosely ordered, since some specifics may change day-to-day.
I've loved Primarina since my first run of Ultra Moon. She just has such a good design—a seal crossed with a mermaid is genius. Not to mention the trans colors, hell yeah!
Togetic was my favorite Pokémon when I was elementary school—I have no idea why. Now, I love them because of nostalgia, and because its design is just so adorable. I never see anyone talking about Togetic; they deserve more love.
When I first saw Bramblin in Pokémon Violet, I was like "oh my god I love them." Such a simple design, but so effective. I want to hold it. It's so good.
The most elegant of the Eeveelutions. Trans colors + ribbons = endless love from me. Has a good shiny form too!
Another Pokémon that doesn't get enough love—Naclstack is awesome. I love its cubic little feet and its silly little face. I wish it didn't evolve into something bipedal, because this is perfection.
I don't remember why Keldo became my favorite legendary/mythical Pokémon, but it stays up here because it's such a cute, clean design. Look at its swooshy tail!
Everybody loves Tinkaton, and I am no exception. A silly, smiling little pink fella, with a massive hammer? Mizutani knew what they were doing when they designed this one.
Turtwig was my first-ever starter Pokémon, in Platinum. To me, Torterra is exactly what I want out of a starter final evolution. It isn't a character like in the more recent games (think Inteleon or Incineroar), it's just... a creature. A giant, awesome creature, with a friggin' tree on its back!
Sigilyph is such a unique design, and it works so well. It's one of only 6 'Mons designed by Keiko Moritsugu, and I wish she made more. This is another one with a great shiny form!
Easily one of the best designs to come out of Gen 7. It's just so cool! Mohawks are usually not my thing, but it works great here, and I love its weird shell hands. Very very interesting.
Revavroom and its pre-evolution Varoom are basically tied for me, but I like Revavroom slightly more. Making a Pokémon out of a ghost in a car engine is such a great idea, and the poison addition seems odd, but actually works incredibly here. Gen 9 had some awesome designs, and this is no exception.
Alcremie is just adorable. A cute Pokémon made out of cream?? Of course I'd love it! It has a great Gigantamax form too, as a giant cake.
Furret has been a favorite of mine since the iconic Furret Walk video became a thing. It's so simple, yet it's adorable! Any Pokémon I think is adorable is an instant pick for one of my favorites. I want the giant Furret plush so badly.
I think Carkol is an interesting pick for one of my favorites, since so many people dislike its design. I just think the idea is really neat, and it looks really cool. Sure, its face is a bit derpy, but like... so what? It's cute! It looks so cool when rolling around in the mineshaft in-game.
I love cats. Sprigatito is a cat? I like Sprigatito. Not complicated. The "holy f*cking bingle. what?! :3" thing is also hilarious. I love throwing my Sprigatito plush across the room.
Lunala makes such a good box legendary. It's giant, majestic, and themed after the moon (one of the best things that exists). Artwork of this Pokémon tends to be so magnificent—anything themed after the cosmos is beautiful. I'm also a huge fan of its mystical-sounding cry.
It's the ears, man. The ears and the tail. If not for them, I wouldn't care at all about Leafeon. Whoever decided that its ears and tail should be crinkly like a leaf needs a massive bonus and some extra vacation days. God, I just like looking at it. It makes me happy.
Staraptor has been one of my favorites since Platinum, my first main-line game. It's just a good design for a starter bird's final evolution. I love its seriousness and the red stripe on its head. It's a bird, but it's a cool bird. Plus, its whole evolution line has great cries.
This is another Pokémon that doesn't really look like a Pokémon at all. It's a bunch of tablets with a dragon-like creature drawn on them, connected by ghostly... stuff. And I love it. Something about these stone tablets being connected like puzzle pieces via ghost limbs, and how the drawing looks like its face, really gets my mind going "yeah". The evolution method is quite fun too.
Most of the reasons I love Zebstrika are nostalgia-based—I have good memories playing Pokémon Black. The design works really well, though. It's an electric horse, nothing more. I really like that the lightning parts are white—I don't think I would like Zebstrika nearly as much if they were yellow, like Manectric.
Bugs are cool. Moths are awesome. Big fire moth with incredible power? Fantastic. God, if this thing were real I would be scared out of my mind—I'm already a big afraid of bugs when they get near me. But as a video game creature, this thing is just the best.
I liked Regieleki's design when I first saw it, but I didn't think much of it. Then I saw its silly idle animation and the way it untangles its "arms" during battle, and decided that this Pokémon is incredible.
This thing doesn't look like a Pokémon at all, it looks like a terrifying, otherworldly creature—and in the context of the game, it pretty much is. Eternatus is so different, but still manages to be so appealing. The strange things poking out, the weird energy core on its torso, its cool face and tail... so good.
It's hard for me to explain why I love Avalugg so much—I just do. I like its design. Seeing how insanely huge it was in Legends: Arceus made me so happy. I love this silly fella.
Gen 5 had some great legendary designs, but Reshiram is the epitome to me. Besides its blue eyes, it's entirely white, yet still has so much to look at. Its tail especially is just stellar, it looks like a jet engine—and the "hair" makes this 'Mon look incredibly ethereal. Plus, y'know, nostalgia points.
I have a good amount of nostalgia for Arceus—but that aside, it's still an incredible design. Fitting for its role in the lore, it looks like a deity. The ring around its torso, its flowing head, its face, the polygonal details, and the gold-tipped legs—it all comes together to make for an incredibly appealing design that perfectly serves its purpose.
He's a guy that can shoot babies out of his head. Of course he's in my list of favorite Pokémon! In all seriousness though, this is such a fantastic design. It's so wacky, yet somehow so cool at the same time. Very impressive stuff :3
When I first saw Centiskorch during my first playthrough of Sword, I instantly fell in love. Bugs are already awesome, but the designers outdid themselves here. A giant fire centipede with flames coming out of its face and tail? Amazing. Not to mention its Gigantamax form, which is just superb.
I'm not weird I swear. Well I'm a little weird, but... that's not the point! I love lizards, and this lizard is particularly cool. She's got a silly mischievous look, cool patterns on her torso, and a cool-ass tail. I dunno what those ribbon things are behind her but I like them too!
I'm a rock fan. I like rocks, and Stonjourner is a bunch of them put together! I like its silly rock arms, its silly face, its rock hat, and especially the two giant rock legs. Interesting design!
I'll be honest, Walrein is just nostalgia for me. It reminds me of when I had a big blue binder of Pokémon cards as a little kid. The design is simple, but I love it.
Pretty much everything about Regigigas' design is cool to me. The weird yellow thingies, the circles, the black things, the grass, and of course its massive size. I'm a big fan of Pokémon that don't even look like living things at all, similar to Sigilyph. Regigigas also gets points for its cool name, and nostalgia for Gen 4.
Eevee is one of only a couple Gen 1 Pokémon I really like. This design is excellent, and has aged super well. It's just a cute, fluffy little fella! Eevee is near the top of my list of Pokémon I'd want as a pet. Its gimmick of having a bunch of evolution options is really neat, too.
Seadra, along with Eevee, is one of the only Gen 1 designs that I love. It's a seahorse, but like... a cool seahorse. The wings look amazing, the expression is daunting, the nose(?) is very neat, and the head triangles (I'm so sorry) really bring it together. I also have nostalgia from my young Pokémon card days.
It's just... a little guy. The littlest of guys. Tiny little snowy fella. Little squishable creature. Itsy-bitsy, clueless, wonderful. A good boy.
