I watch a lot of YouTube—perhaps more than I should. Here are some videos I really like, and explanations about why I like them! There's some educational stuff, there's some silly stuff, and everything in between!
Videos appear in no particular order.
At the moment, The Amazing Digital Circus is my favorite show, and The Greatest Showman was my favorite movie for a long time. Seeing them come together like this, with so much skill and passion? INCREDIBLE. Love it.
This is one of my favorite YouTube videos, and certainly my favorite educational video. Math is such a fascination of mine, as long as I'm not the one actually doing the math (as I've always been awful at it). Veritasium explains the Collatz Conjecture so well, and it's such a fascinating problem.
Brian David Gilbert is such a wonderful man, and this video shows it all—his humor his nerdiness, and his genuinely impressive musical abilities. For anybody who loves Pokémon, this video—which is the recording of a half-hour live presentation culminating in the performance of BDG's 9-minute Perfect Pokérap—is an absolute treat. No more spoilers, go watch!
This is a masterpiece of a film, a documentary of Defunctland's quest to find the composer of Disney Channel's iconic 4-note theme. It's a very special video, and I'd recommend it to anybody who watched Disney Channel as a kid (or hell, anyone who just likes cool films).
Look, this is a stupid video. It's a 10-second clip of a famously awful Christmas special from 2002. But when I saw this clip in freshman year of college, I thought it was so stupidly hilarious that I fell out of my chair and laughed so hard I couldn't breath. My friends were genuinely worried for my health. I'm super fond of that memory, so this is a video worth sharing <3
This animation is my #1 favorite YouTube video. It's so adorable, and perfectly captures the essence of this infamous song remix in such a lovely and unique way. I love Aimkid's animations. My friend and I also have a bit with this video, where I'm the sweet orange cat and he's the wild blue dog. Whenever we watch this video together we perform our respective parts, and it's a grand ol' time!
It's been a while since I've watched this video, but I'd like to watch it again. The title is accurate—you watch the journey of a guy who wanted to create his own life in the wilderness as he builds a log cabin. The video is so serene, with practically no dialogue. Just the sounds of nature and him working. It's really incredible, and feels very meaningful.
Little Runmo is a short animated film made by Gooseworx, a good few years before she made Digital Circus, and it's amazing. It's so hard to explain what it is—I would highly recommend you just go watch it. It has incredibly creative character designs, super expressive animations, and a phenomenal soundtrack. The plot is weird and strange and a little dark and disturbing, but I adore it. Go watch Little Runmo!
Shoot From the Hip is a wonderful improv comedy group, and I think this video is a perfect encapsulation of what they're like. I have cried laughing to their skits, I have laughed so hard I nearly threw up. They're so silly.
This video is just pure joy. There's no real substance—just my favorite Nintendo YouTuber absolutely losing it over the casting decisions of the Super Mario movie. This video never fails to make me smile.
Daniel Thrasher is hilarious, and this is one of my all-time favorite sketches of his. Just simple, absurd comedy :)
This is Part 1 of a supercut of a guy with (virtually) no Minecraft knowledge or experience playing through the game completely blind, with no outside help. It is a fascinating series, and lets you see the game through the eyes of somebody extremely unfamiliar with its mechanics. Oliver is damn smart—it's super impressive watching him figure out how the game works. If you're a Minecraft player, I can't recommend this enough.
How can you not love this?
